20 Metre Shuttle Run

This field test for the prediction of maximum oxygen uptake. The test has been used extensively over recent years by sporing clubs and coaches and is particularly suitable for people involved in field and court games which require stop-start movements and constant changes of direction (agility).

The test requires subjects to run back and forth between two lines 20 metres apart, with a foot stepping on or over the line at the completion of each shuttle lap.

The test is made up of 21 levels, with each level taking approximately one minute to complete. the speed required to complete each shuttle gradually increases as the subjects progress from level 1 through towards level 21. The speed increases at a rate of 0.5 km/hr. The shuttle speed is constant within any specified level. An audio signal (tape or CD) is used to conduct the test.
